Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program

The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program aims to improve the mental health and overall wellbeing of rural and peri-urban communities. The program will provide education, resources, and support to individuals and families to address mental health challenges, reduce stigma, and promote psychosocial resilience.

The under-financing of the health sector has reduced its ability to ensure an adequate level of healthcare for the population. Thus, the provision of health and medical care services in Kenya is partly dependent on donors. In 2002, more than 16% of the total expenditure on healthcare originated from donors. There are also other factors inhibiting Kenya’s ability to provide adequate healthcare for its citizens. These include: inefficient utilization of resources, the increasing burden of diseases and the rapid population growth. Access to health and medical care is unequally distributed across the country, as is the fertility rate and the level of education. Generally speaking, the Central Province and Nairobi are deemed to have the best facilities, whereas the North-Eastern Province is found to be the most underdeveloped. Nyanza region is among the disadvantaged areas when it comes to integrated health care systems.

Mental health is indeed an emerging and significant problem in developing countries. Increased rates of mental illnesses continue to manifest in evident-actions such as depression and suicide cases in the country. Several factors contribute to the increasing prevalence and recognition of mental health issues in these regions: these include limited awareness, stigma, poverty and socio-economic limitations among governments and the people, cultural factors, urbanization and lifestyle changes, and increased rates of infectious chronic diseases.

Hope & Development is making efforts and aligning itself with global intervention to address mental health in our communities, including initiatives to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and improve access to mental health services. We work with members of the community of all ages and social walks in order to promote mental wellbeing as a precursor to overall health wellbeing. We pay special attention to vulnerable members of the community, particularly women, children, persons living with disability, and key population due to their higher predisposal to mental challenges as a result of their unique predicament. It is our hope and desire that everyone, irrespective of their social status, has access to mental health interventions for their wellbeing.
